Lighting as an Engagement Tool: A Quick How-to

When the main lights drop, and the stage bursts into a flurry of light and action, that is the moment of engagement. At that precise moment, you’ve either won or lost your audience, are they going to get involved in this event or not…

Lighting is arguably the most important factor when it comes to any live production, be it an event, conference or musical.

Of course, it lights up the stage so everyone can clearly see what’s going on, but it also does something a lot more powerful than that and really engages audience members, if done well.

So, with that in mind, here are just four ways your lighting can have a real impact and give your event a whole new personality.

An Emotional Trigger

Lighting has the power to evoke emotions in your audience, so make sure from the outset you’re considering your objectives and how you want to connect with the attendees. You are most likely going to want to project a happy and positive mood, so think brighter colours to magnify this. Likewise, if it’s a feeling of suspense, then darker colours and perhaps a backlight to create silhouettes. You’ll be surprised at how much of an impact mood lighting has on creating a memorable experience.


Setting the Scene

Whatever your event, you’re telling a story. And, of course, the most effective way to do that is through all of the elements – content, sound, and lighting. Going hand-in-hand with the emotional triggers, it’s an art form to set the scene perfectly. We’d suggest dramatic lighting effects to start with to really grab the attention of your audience. Think flashes and bold colours to go alongside the sound.  As the production continues, weave in exciting elements such as lasers and graphics, this will bring your audience right into the space with you.


It may seem an obvious one but signage really is crucial – but you don’t want to be over the top and just make your production look like an advertising tool (okay, we know when it comes to it, that’s what it is, but it’s the way you sell it that’s key).  And it doesn’t have to be boring, either.  You can use lighting to really enhance your signs – even with LED screens, interactive screens and more. And with wireless up-lighting you can position the lights wherever – so entrances, side of stages and there will be no worries about unruly cords!

Brand recognition

Finally, and one of the most important factors of all is to make sure your attendees walk away knowing who you are and what you do and would know your brand if they saw it again. Make sure the lighting exudes your brand’s ‘character’ – if it’s a fun brand, have a play around with colours that you use in your colour palette and if it’s a cool, but serious aim you are going for, then clean spotlights could be useful. Don’t overcomplicate things though – sometimes less is more.

The right combination of lighting makes all the difference, transforming your event from dull to dazzling. Figure out which approach will help you enthrall your attendees and create the engagement you desire for a memorable event.
